By Tim P. LuehrsenThe American Chemical Society has just released a report that shows that a new laser protection product could prevent damage to vehicles in the event of a laser hitting a vehicle.
The report, “A laser protection paint and film for highway safety: Laser safety,” describes a technology called LaserShield™.
LaserShield is a paint and protective film that can be applied to a vehicle or a road surface by a professional.
The technology is designed to absorb laser light and reduce its impact on the vehicle or road surface.
“When a laser strikes a vehicle, the vehicle may not have enough energy to absorb the laser energy,” said John R. Staley, Ph.
D., president of the American Chemical Institute.
“As a result, the laser will pass through the vehicle and may damage it.”
LaserShield is designed specifically to help protect vehicles.
Its material is so strong that it can withstand an impact from a laser beam of 1 milliwatt, or about 1,000,000th of a watt.
“This is a major advancement in automotive safety technology,” said David P. Johnson, Ph., president and chief operating officer of the LaserShield Group, Inc. “Laser Shield will also help us protect the environment from lasers.”
The report explains how LaserShield can protect against the impact of a 2.5 milliwott laser, a beam of about 10,000 times the power of the sun.
A laser that strikes a car may not damage the vehicle, but the impact could cause damage.
Larger laser beams, which are more damaging, could cause vehicles to shatter, and damage other vehicles.
The technology also protects against laser beam-induced damage to vehicle tires and brake pads, which could cause an injury.
The industry has been testing LaserShield for years and is working to develop a more durable, more environmentally friendly, and more affordable product, said Jim Osterloh, president and CEO of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
LaserLightShield was developed by Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, Inc., and is designed for use in automotive products.
The National Highway Safety Administration is reviewing the Lasershield report.
The safety of the nation’s roads is our top priority, Johnson said.
