A few years ago, the National Institute of Health published a report titled “How Black Body Film Affects the Skin.”
According to the study, black protective films had a negative effect on the skin’s tone and texture.
“We know that people who use black protective devices have higher levels of the melanin pigment melanin,” said Dr. Michael E. DeAngelis, MD, an internist and director of the Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery at New York University Medical Center.
“We also know that these devices may cause more irritation to the skin and, therefore, lower its effectiveness in controlling inflammation.”
Black protective films, which are produced by a company called Epoxy, were approved in 1996 for the treatment of eczema.
Since then, the FDA has approved them for many other conditions, including rashes, acne, burns, and eczemas.
However, when used to treat eczems, black films may be a problem for those who are already prone to eczemic acne or skin disorders, like psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis.
“This is not a new problem for the FDA,” said Eileen M. Kuehl, PhD, a dermatologist at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Medical Center and the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
“There are more than 1,000 FDA-approved skin care products that contain black films.
“It has been shown that black film products can actually have a positive effect on skin health, especially when used in conjunction with a topical acne treatment,” said dermatologist Dr. Thomas C. DeLuca, MD.
“Black film can help control acne and ecziemas, and they are also beneficial in treating psorias and rheumatism.”
The FDA has yet to regulate the use of black film, but it is expected to do so sometime next year.
Black film is a type of film made from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC.
PVC has a distinctive, almost black-black hue.
According to the FDA, PVCs are made from a variety of materials and are often applied to the body, including the hair and nails.
“The skin is composed of a mix of proteins, fatty acids, and other components,” said DeLucas.
“These ingredients can cause irritation and, consequently, inflammation in the skin.
Therefore, the body’s natural defense mechanisms are in the process of activating to fight against the damaging substances.”
According in the report, “The skin contains numerous cells that absorb and use these substances.
They have a great ability to regulate skin function.
In addition, skin cells have receptors that allow them to detect substances in the environment.”
Black films are commonly used as a skin protection product, but their effectiveness is unknown.
“Skin cancer is a major health problem, and the fact that black films are sometimes used for topical use may contribute to this problem,” said Kuell.
“Some studies suggest that the use might cause increased risk of skin cancer, particularly among women, elderly people, and people with skin conditions such as eczemedias and psoriatrists.”
When people are using black protective products, they’re also using them to help them control their acne,” said deLucas, who added that some research has suggested that the black film may be more effective than the non-pVC version.
“It’s just another way to treat your skin and help control your eczemia. “
People need to understand that when you buy a product like black film from a store, it’s not a permanent solution,” she said.

While the FDA will be approving black film for use as a cosmetic product, the process for approving it for use in dermatology is still ongoing.
