US regulators have approved a new film technology that could help the US protect air defenses against an emerging threat.
Air-defense technologies are being increasingly used to help defend the country against emerging threats such as pandemics and other threats.
Aerotect is a new type of film technology which uses special-purpose filters to shield the electronics of airliners and other aircraft from the harmful gases emitted by the engine.
This new technology could help US air defense forces defend against the potential for attacks against our airspace by terrorists or rogue states, said David O’Sullivan, director of air defense technology programs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
In a statement, the agency said it had approved aerotection film for use in the US air-defense system.
Aerotection films are generally used in the military to protect against high-pressure air bursts.
The film is a thin layer of plastic, usually made of polyethylene, over a layer of liquid that contains a coating of aluminum oxide, to reflect light back at the air.
The technology could be particularly useful against incoming weapons that are guided to the ground, said Air-Defense Technology Laboratory director Peter Kupferberg.
The US military has developed more than 100 types of aerotector for air defenses, including a new one, which uses a filter to protect from incoming bullets.
But the new aerotective film could help defend against emerging air threats such a pandemic or another attack, said O’Neill, who is also a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
“Aerotechnologists have been working on this technology for years, and we’ve seen that it can help us fight the pandemic,” O’Niesen said.
“But now we have this technology to help us protect our air defenses.”
The new aerotechnological film, called Aerotect, is designed to deflect incoming bullets and prevent them from hitting the aircraft, according to a press release from the US Air Force.
The agency said the film has the potential to reduce the effectiveness of other air defense systems by up to 20%.
The film could be used for the air-to-ground missile defense system, according the release.
Aerojet, a manufacturer of aerotechronic systems for air-defence purposes, is also using the technology to protect the Pentagon’s new aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, which is due to enter service next year.
Aerial refueling is a huge area of potential air-warfare threats in the next decade.
Some experts believe that such a threat could result in a conflict between the US and China.
In the meantime, US lawmakers are looking to expand the number of air-and-space weapons to include missiles and bombers.
A draft bill passed by the House on Tuesday would create a Defense Department office tasked with researching and developing technologies that could be employed against aircraft and other military targets.
The Air Force has already announced it plans to begin testing aerotech-based missiles on the carrier USS John F. Kennedy in 2019, and is already testing a prototype in the Pacific.
